For many years now I’ve thought that there must be a natural way to improve my vision and live life without prescription glasses.
Over the last ten years, I’ve bought two pairs of pinhole glasses with the aim of improving my eyesight naturally. I’ve also done various eye exercises, but not for any length of time. For some reason, I just haven’t been able to stick with it. In June this year, however, I bought a new pair of pinhole glasses and have been wearing them regularly, substituting these for my prescription glasses whenever I can.
I’ve noticed improvements in both my vision, particularly at night. I also feel more relaxed, can sit with much more ease in meditation and feel more aligned.
Pinhole glasses are made of black plastic with pinhole-sized holes stamped into the plastic. They enable me to see relatively clearly without my prescription glasses. Its like looking through a wall of transparent honeycomb, which takes a little getting used to but isn’t unpleasant. I still have to wear my prescription glasses when driving, when I need to see in great detail or working with very small text on my laptop.
My prescription glasses make my eyeballs very tense. After wearing prescription glasses for extended periods of time, I also noticed how tense my whole body and nervous system became. I’m now wearing my prescription glasses much less: the less I wear them, the more relaxed I feel.
I’ve also been reading a book by Peter Grunwald, Eyebody, The Art of Integrating Eye, Brain and Body. As the book suggests, the Eyebody system focuses on an integrated approach to seeing. When we think of our eyesight, we often just focus on our eyeballs. One of the instructions in Peter’s book is to see from the back of your head, where the visual cortex is. When I started to do this, I noticed how much more relaxed my whole body, especially my eyes became.
Almost instantly, the uncomfortable tension in my neck, shoulders and back that had been appearing when seated in meditation released, and I’ve been able to sit in meditation with ease since then. My hips also feel more aligned.
When making any significant change in our lives, it takes dedication and the right motivation. It is my commitment to my health, the quest for better vision and the clarity that this brings – both visually and mentally – that is driving my desire for change.

Acupuncture can also support natural vision improvement. In the Five Phases system, the eyes correspond to the liver meridian. Nourishing the liver meridian with acupuncture can help to bring more blood and qi to the eyes to support natural healing. Eating foods which support the liver and the eyes is also beneficial. To nourish the eyes, we focus on nourishing the liver by eating foods that are green in colour (associated with the wood element). Try including plenty of spinach, kale, silverbeet and broccoli into your diet. If you have heat signs, you can also add artichoke and tomato, which are both thermally cooling. Grains such as rye, spelt, wheat, wheat bran and wheat flour are also beneficial for the liver.
